In 2010, Gramophone Magazine lauded “Vogel’s perfect intonation” and Classical CD Review wrote: “Vogel is about the most ideal exponent a composer could hope for”. Considered one of the finest German violinists of her generation, she is renowned for “... authoritative and highly sensitive performances” (Music Web International),” and a “formidable technique, stunning musicality, and stage presence that transmits to orchestra and audience alike.” (Brahms Concerto, Wuppertaler Zeitung).
Vogel‘s exceptional talent and musicianship is recognized by numerous prestigious solo prizes and scholarships. Vogel was one of the musicians chosen to perform in a Gala concerthonoring Dorothy Delay‘s seventy-fifth birthday, where she played Brahms Concerto with Keith Lockhart.
A Full Professor, Annette-Barbara Vogel joined Western University in 2004 where she is in high demand as a pedagogue. Prior to coming to Canada, Vogel held several university teaching positions: she was “Artist- in-Residence” at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, professor at Folkwang-Hochschule Essen, and subsequently professor at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, where she was founder and Artistic Director of ”MAGISTERRA! International Chamber Music Festival and Academy.”
Vogel’s musical training has been multifaceted: in addition to her two soloist and artist diplomas “summa com laude” from Folkwang Hochschule Essen and Cincinnati College-Conservatory she also holds a degree in chamber music with distinction. Additional studies took her to Los Angeles (University of Southern California, violin pedagogy with Alice Schoenfeld), Basel /Switzerland (Chamber Music, Walter Levin, LaSalle Quartet) and Amsterdam (Sweelinck Konservatorium, Herman Krebbers). Two recently released CDs of Vogel’s over twelve commercial recordings, the much anticipated complete violin repertoire of Hans Gál, met with critical acclaim, citing her “committed performances... [and] winning presence [of] her tone and delivery” (The Strad). Her February 2011 CD release “Französische Komponistinnen,” which includes works by French women composers Farrenc, Boulanger, and Viardot received the British IRR Outstanding Recording Award. About her newest CD release with Daniel Sweaney „Through the Centuries” (June 2013) American Record Guide April 2014 writes: “This is an exceptional recital of violin-and- viola duos for three reasons: the very worth- while unusual repertoire, the superior playing, and Blue Griffin’s clear, detailed, immediate, airy, natural sonics.” Her recording of violin sonatas of European Women Composers Ethel Smyth, Elfrieda Andrée and Mel Bonis will be released in 2017.
